Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu offers a dedicated scholarship program for international students who want to pursue a full undergraduate degree at UMB. The program is called the UMB International Student Scholarship, and it opens once a year. Scholarships are awarded to candidates who meet the eligibility requirements and pass all three stages of the selection process. UMB welcomes applicants from all countries, and there is no restriction on nationality or region of origin.
The scholarship covers a four-year undergraduate study period and is available in three categories, each with a different coverage package depending on the level of support provided.
Scholarship Categories
Type A The most comprehensive package. Recipients receive full tuition coverage for four years, a monthly living stipend, dormitory accommodation, health coverage through UMB's on-campus clinic, and campus wifi access.
Type B The same as Type A, with the exception of the monthly living stipend. All other benefits apply.
Type C Tuition waiver only. Recipients do not receive a living stipend or dormitory accommodation. Health coverage and wifi access are also not included under this type.
What Is Not Covered
Regardless of scholarship type, the following costs are the responsibility of the student.
- Textbooks and academic supplies
- Electricity charges for dormitory or boarding house
- Advanced medical procedures, hospitalization, surgery, or any treatment that cannot be handled at UMB's on-campus clinic
- Student visa, ITAS (Limited Stay Permit), and return airfare
- Local transportation within Bengkulu
Students should plan their personal budget around these items from the start.
Health Coverage Note
Health coverage under the UMB International Student Scholarship is provided through UMB's own medical clinics, specifically Klinik Pratama Ibnu Sina and UMB Medical Center. Scholarship recipients can access clinic services free of charge for general health consultations and standard treatment. This coverage is separate from Indonesia's national health insurance system (BPJS) and does not extend to specialist referrals, surgical procedures, or inpatient hospital care beyond what the clinics can handle directly.
Selection Process
The scholarship selection runs in three stages. All stages must be completed in sequence, and candidates who do not pass one stage do not proceed to the next.
Stage 1 — Administrative Selection
The first stage reviews each applicant's submitted documents. Assessors look at academic records from senior high school, TOEFL score, recommendation letter, and any academic or non-academic achievements during high school. Completeness and quality of the application package both matter at this stage.
Stage 2 — Interview
Candidates who pass the administrative stage are invited to an interview. This is not a formality. The interview goes into depth on the candidate's background, academic motivations, language ability, and consistency between what is in the application documents and what the candidate can demonstrate in conversation. Candidates should come prepared to speak for themselves clearly and honestly.
Stage 3 — Medical Clearance
Candidates who pass the interview proceed to a medical check. A certificate of good physical and mental health, issued by a government hospital in the candidate's home country, is required. This document must be obtained after passing Stage 2 and submitted as part of the final clearance process.
After Selection
Candidates who pass all three stages will receive a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) from UMB. The LoA is the basis for the next steps: applying for the student visa and obtaining a Study Permit (Izin Belajar) from Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. UGE will guide accepted scholarship recipients through both processes.
