UMB Global Pathways

UMB Global Pathways is the umbrella program for all international mobility and engagement activities undertaken by students and faculty at Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. The name reflects a deliberate design choice. Internationalization at UMB is not a collection of scattered one-off programs that happen when opportunities arise. It is a structured, branded ecosystem with a clear direction, managed centrally by UMB Global Engagement and built to grow year on year. Every student exchange, every faculty visit abroad, every incoming visiting professor, every international conference, every joint research project, and every overseas community service program sits under this one roof. The logic is simple: when all these activities carry a shared identity, they reinforce each other. A student who participates in a Global Pathways short course this semester is more likely to apply for a Global Pathways exchange next year. A faculty member who hosts a visiting professor through Global Pathways builds a relationship that can later produce a joint publication or a collaborative curriculum. The program is designed to create momentum, not isolated events.

The broader inspiration for UMB Global Pathways draws from the model of prestigious international scholarship and exchange programs that operate with a clear brand, a defined selection process, a structured support system, and a long-term vision for what participants should gain and contribute after the experience. Programs of this kind invest not just in the individual who travels, but in the institution that sends them and the communities on both ends of the exchange. UMB Global Pathways follows the same philosophy. The goal is not simply to send people abroad or to host guests from other countries. The goal is to build a generation of UMB students and faculty who are genuinely internationally competent, who have worked alongside people from different academic traditions, who have navigated unfamiliar professional and social environments, and who bring that experience back into the classrooms, laboratories, and communities they serve in Bengkulu and beyond.

UMB Global Pathways covers both outbound and inbound directions. On the outbound side, the program sends UMB students to partner universities and institutions in countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Türkiye, and Brunei Darussalam, through formats that include student exchanges, short courses, international internships, overseas community service (KKN Internasional), academic conferences, and research visits. Faculty members travel through the same framework, whether as visiting lecturers at partner institutions, as participants in international academic forums, or as researchers collaborating with overseas counterparts. On the inbound side, Global Pathways brings visiting professors and international academics to UMB's campus, hosts short courses for students from partner universities abroad, organizes international conferences in Bengkulu, and manages the full experience of international students who choose to study at UMB. Every one of these programs carries the Global Pathways name, and every participant, whether coming or going, is part of the same story.

What distinguishes UMB Global Pathways from ad hoc international activities is the institutional commitment behind it. Participation is open to students and faculty who meet the applicable requirements for each program, and the selection process is taken seriously because the university treats each outbound participant as a representative of UMB and each inbound participant as a guest the institution is responsible for. UGE manages the logistics, the partnerships, the documentation, and the follow-through. But the program is bigger than any one office. UMB Global Pathways is the university's clearest statement that Bengkulu is not the edge of the world. It is a starting point.
