An international internship under UMB Global Pathways is an opportunity for UMB students to complete their required internship placement at an organization or institution abroad. The program covers a wide range of host settings. Students can intern at educational institutions, private companies and business entities, government bodies including embassies and consulates general, or non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across various countries. The diversity of host options reflects the reality that professional experience looks different depending on a student's field of study and career direction. A nursing student and a communication studies student will not be looking at the same kind of placement, and the program is designed with that in mind. What matters is that the internship is substantive, professionally relevant, and conducted in an international environment that pushes students beyond what a domestic placement can offer.
Every international internship under this program requires prior approval from the department. The department reviews the placement to ensure it aligns with the student's program requirements before the student proceeds. Once approved, the internship is carried out under the supervision of UMB Global Engagement, which coordinates with the host organization, monitors the student's progress during the placement period, and manages the administrative requirements on UMB's end. Students are not sent abroad and left to figure things out alone. UGE maintains contact throughout the internship period and steps in when students need institutional support on either side of the process.
The minimum duration for an international internship is one month. Students who complete the placement within the applicable timeframe are eligible for credit recognition under UMB's credit transfer policy, in line with the same Rector's Decree that governs the student exchange program. Students interested in pursuing an international internship should approach UGE early to discuss potential host organizations and begin the approval process well in advance of their intended start date, as arranging an overseas placement takes longer than a domestic one and availability at host organizations varies by period and field.
