UMB students have the opportunity to carry out their community service program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata / KKN) abroad as part of UMB Global Pathways. International Community Engagement, as this program is formally known within the Global Pathways framework, places students in real community settings overseas where they apply their academic knowledge to address actual needs on the ground. Placements are arranged through several channels. UMB has access to Muhammadiyah Special Branch offices (Cabang Istimewa Muhammadiyah) in various countries, which provide an established network and local support structure for students working in those communities. Beyond the Muhammadiyah network, placements can also be arranged through international organizations and other overseas partners that UMB has built relationships with over the years. Countries where UMB students have previously carried out international community service include Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Brunei Darussalam.
The program is not simply a trip abroad with a community service label attached to it. It is a structured academic activity with the same institutional weight as the domestic KKN program. Before departing, students must obtain written approval from UMB's Research and Community Service Institute (Lembaga Penelitian dan Pengabdian Masyarakat / LPPM). This approval is mandatory and non-negotiable. Students who proceed without it will not have their activity recognized. Once approved, each student is assigned a Field Supervisor (Dosen Pembimbing Lapangan / DPL) designated by LPPM, who provides academic guidance and oversight throughout the program. The DPL arrangement ensures that students are not working without direction while they are abroad, and that the community work they carry out meets the academic standards UMB requires.
After receiving LPPM approval and before departing, students are also required to report their program to UGE. This reporting step is important for several reasons. UGE maintains a record of all students on international programs at any given time, coordinates with the overseas host or partner organization, and provides institutional support if students encounter issues during their time abroad. Students interested in pursuing International Community Engagement should begin the process early, ideally at least one semester in advance, as securing both a suitable overseas placement and the required LPPM approval takes time. UGE can assist with identifying potential placement options and connecting students with the right partners abroad.
